Today is Disability in Kidlit’s three-year anniversary! What was originally intended to be a one-month event has now reached its third birthday, and we could not be more ecstatic!
Over the past years, we’ve amassed over two hundred reviews, articles, discussions, and interviews. We’ve hosted multiple events focused on various disabilities and genres. We’ve led Twitter chats, compiled numerous book lists, and expanded our team as the site has grown. It’s been an incredible three years, to say the least.
To celebrate this milestone, we wanted to do something a little different this month. Every Friday in July we’ll be posting an article written by the Disability in Kidlit team tackling disability representation in a broader way. We’ll discuss terminology dos, don’ts, and whys; the current state of disability representation on MG and YA covers; and more. These will be general resources that will function as part of a “starter kit” for people interested in disability representation.
That’s not the only exciting thing happening this month, though—we’re also announcing our official newsletter! Once a month, we’ll be sending subscribers links to recent posts, featured posts from the archives, our most recent call for contributors, news on upcoming events, and more. You can sign up here, and the first issue will be sent out at the end of the month.
Last, but certainly not least, make sure you check back this afternoon for a grand unveiling! We’ll be debuting a project that’s been in the works for over a year and that we hope will be a valuable asset to the kidlit community.
Thank you to everyone—contributors, readers, fans—who has made the past three years possible. We wouldn’t be here without you, and we can’t express how grateful we are. Here’s to a fantastic past and a fantastic future for disability in middle grade and young adult fiction!
