For as long as I could remember, I had been surrounded by people with special needs; I wasn’t aware that there were kids my age that didn’t have disabilities.

Though I would have liked more disability details woven into the story, I relate to and applaud the author’s portrayal of cerebral palsy overall.

Although the book was fun and interesting in places, the disability aspect was very much a freak-show presentation of disability and the disabled experience.

I have to accumulate all the data from these varying experiences and use them to define myself. Otherwise, others will do it for me.

What you won’t be able to see when you first meet me is this: I’m a published author. I read all the time. I write all the time, too. I dictate, using an old-fashioned cassette recorder, and my mother types up my finished drafts.
